The right pulmonary artery divides into a superior and an inferior trunk (interlobar artery) behind the superior vena cava in the mediastinum (Fig. 6‑2, Fig. 6‑3). These vessels branch to supply blood to the pulmonary capillaries, where gas exchange occurs within the lung alveoli. Blood returns via the pulmonary veins to the left atrium.
