Nitriding stainless steel barrels
WebbThe nitride penetrates the steel structure by a few thousands of inches, forming alloying elements with chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium in barrel steel. As for the result, … Webb1 mars 2011 · Most stainless steel barrels are cut out of 416 because they know how to work with it, and not because it's the best there is. Actually 410 or 420 would be better from the data I have. But once again much harder to machine. Some folks are now using 17PH4 rearc melt stainless.

Wear-testing results. The test used was a sliding-wear test using a dry-sliding ball-on-flat-surface configuration. The ball measures 32 mm in diameter and is made from ... WebbAll True Precisions Barrels are 416R stainless and all Slides are 17-4 stainless. While these stainless steels are corrosion and rust-resistant, they are NOT rust-proof. Proper lubrication and cleaning are recommended especially in salty or humid environments.
WebbNitrocarburising is a variation of the case hardening process. It is a thermochemical diffusion process where nitrogen, carbon, and to a very small degree, oxygen atoms diffuse into the surface of the steel part, forming a compound layer at the surface, and a diffusion layer. Nitrocarburising is a shallow case variation of the nitriding process. Webb25 mars 2024 · A stainless steel barrel would be better for accuracy but I'm planning to run & gun this particular light-weight AR-10 like an AR-15 and am attracted to the barrel life of a chrome-lined barrel. ... The same holds true for my nitride barrels but my unlined barrels are the most consistent shooters. LeadZeke said:
WebbDuring this process, a nitride is applied by quenching-polishing-quenching (QPQ) the barrel in a nitrogen-rich salt bath. The nitride penetrates the steel structure by a few thousands of inches, forming alloying elements with chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium in barrel steel. Webb16 jan. 2024 · If I could, every barrel I would get would be nitrided. The nitriding process alone provides a good degree of rust resistance because of the alteration of the metal structure. If it's a specific method of nitriding, i.e. Melonite or QPQ, it's significantly more corrosion *and* wear resistant than Stainless.
Webb12 apr. 2024 · Stainless steel barrels are incredibly useful — they have a heat erosion resistance far superior to chrome-moly barrels and their high resistance to rust almost completely takes away ... Nitride barrels are more resistant to rust but with enough time, heat exposure and moisture, it too can rust. Nothing is 100% rust proof. Why are ...
